Alloy 316/316L (UNS S31600/S31603) is a chromium-nickelmolybdenum austenitic stainlesssteel developed to provide improvedcorrosion resistance to Alloy304/304L in moderately corrosiveenvironments. It is often utilized inprocess streams containing chloridesor halides. The addition ofmolybdenum improves generalcorrosion and chloride pittingresistance. It also provides highercreep, stress-to-rupture and tensilestrength at elevated temperatures.It is common practice for 316L tobe dual certified as 316 and 316L.The low carbon chemistry of 316Lcombined with an addition ofnitrogen enables 316L to meet themechanical properties of 316.Alloy 316/316L resists atmosphericcorrosion, as well as, moderatelyoxidizing and reducing environments.It also resists corrosion in pollutedmarine atmospheres. The alloy hasexcellent resistance to intergranularcorrosion in the as-welded condition.Alloy 316/316L has excellent strengthand toughness at cryogenictemperatures.Alloy 316/316L is non-magnetic inthe annealed condition, but canbecome slightly magnetic as a resultof cold working or welding. It can beeasily welded and processed bystandard shop fabrication practices.
